Sikhs in the UK are celebrating an historic achievement that saw 10 British Sikhs elected as MPs in last week’s election that saw the Labour party sweep to power with a record number of MPs in a huge majority government. “We are thrilled to share a momentous milestone for the Sikh community worldwide. In the recent UK parliamentary elections, the Labour Party secured a landslide victory, and, for the first time in history, 10 members of the Sikh community have been elected to the UK parliament. This significant achievement marks a new era of representation and inclusivity,” said Dr. Rajwant Singh of UK-based Sikhs Group National Sikh Campaign (NSC). The winning Sikh MPs include veterans Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi and Preet Kaur Gill, both of whom have been re-elected for the third consecutive time. The new brigade includes Harpreet Kaur Uppal, Warinder Juss, Kirith Entwistle, Sonia Kumar, Satvir Kaur, Dr. Jeevun Sandher, Jas Athwal, and Gurinder Singh Josan.

LONDON – Sikhs in the UK are celebrating an historic achievement that saw 10 British Sikhs elected as MPs in last week’s election that saw the Labour party sweep to power with a record number of MPs in a huge majority government.

“We are thrilled to share a momentous milestone for the Sikh community worldwide. In the recent UK parliamentary elections, the Labour Party secured a landslide victory, and, for the first time in history, 10 members of the Sikh community have been elected to the UK parliament. This significant achievement marks a new era of representation and inclusivity,” said Dr. Rajwant Singh of UK-based Sikhs Group National Sikh Campaign (NSC).

Among the newly-elected MPs are Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi and Preet Kaur Gill, both of whom have been re-elected for the third consecutive time. Their unwavering dedication to addressing Sikh and other community issues has been instrumental in fostering unity and progress, Singh said. 

“We are also proud to highlight the accomplishments of the first-time MPs: Harpreet Kaur Uppal, Warinder Juss, Kirith Entwistle, Sonia Kumar, Satvir Kaur, Dr. Jeevun Sandher, Jas Athwal, and Gurinder Singh Josan. Their election signifies a powerful step forward in ensuring diverse voices are heard in the political sphere,” he said.

“At NSC, we believe in celebrating and supporting the accomplishments of our community members. We are incredibly proud of our newly-elected MPs and look forward to their contributions in shaping a more inclusive and progressive society.

“Let's take a moment to celebrate this achievement and continue our collective efforts towards unity and representation,” he said.

Aside from Sikhs, the election saw a total of 29 Indo-British MPs entering the House of Commons after winning seats in the general election, setting a new record. In the last House of Commons there were 18 Indo-British MPs (nine Labour, eight Conservatives and one Lib Dem).

By the far the greatest number are with Labour, which has got 12 new Indo-British MPs. In addition six Labour Indo-British MPs — Lisa Nandy, Nadia Whittome, Navendu Mishra, Preet Gill, Valerie Vaz, and Seema Malhotra — held their seats with comfortable majorities.
