EDITOR'S NOTE: This kind of brutal killing as in the case of Sidhu Moosewala (Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu) should not happen to any artist, even to those who fashion themselves to be gangster-rappers. DESIBUZZCanada reported yesterday that Sidhu Moosewala’s ticket sales were delayed in Vancouver over concerns about security and violence! Now there will never be a Moosewala concert again. He was a great writer. I was not a fan of his rapping which did make him a superstar at a young age. His ambitions grew and he thought he could become a politician and since his huge defeat in Punjab elections earlier this year he has been running his mouth off instead of accepting the loss and humbly moving on. He’s become a modern Chamkila both for his smaller body of work (he can never equal the legendary Chamkila) but more for the way he was shot and killed! It’s a sad legacy and a reminder and hopefully a wake-up call for Punjabi music industry to lay off wanna-be gangster trends and stick to music like the greats do. Please take lessons from Kant-walk Mann. RIP!

MANSA/CHANDIGARH - Punjabi gangster-rapper and budding politician for the defeated Punjab Congress outfit Sidhu Moosewala (Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu) was brutally gunned down on Sunday May 29, coincidentally the number aligns to the number on his last album 295 (or break it down and it is the 29/5 when he was killed).

Moosewala, like many other gangster-rappers from the US who partake in lyrics about personal rivalries, death and destruction and general mayhem, also seemed to have predicted his own demise in the song The Last Ride, where he raps about being killed at a young age (he was only 28-years-old) and says: “Chobar De Chere Te Noor Dasda – Ke Ehda Uthu Ga Jawani Ch Janaza Mithiye”  - which translates to that the glow on this young man (player) says that he will be killed in his youth.

The Last Ride music video also shows photos on T-shirts of American rapper Tupac Shakur who like Moosewala was also gunned down due to association with gangsters and beefs with rival rappers and the usual Bad Boy lifestyle that is part of the gangster-rapper scene.

The murder of Moosewala by unidentified assailants at Jawaharke village in Mansa district on Sunday evening after he left his home with some friends and was followed by two cars comes a day after the state government halved the number of security personnel in his security detail but he had a bullet-proof car which for some reason he was not in when shot and killed with high power weapons.

But Punjab’s revolutionary Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was quick to condemn the controversial rapper’s murder, saying that those involved in the attack on singer Sidhu Moose Wala won't be spared. The Aam Aadmi Party Punjab chief also urged everyone to remain calm.

The incident took place at Jawaharke village when Moosewala along with two others was about four kilometres from his residence in Moosa village. Police said Sidhu was in his Mahindra Thar when unidentified persons opened fire on the vehicle. More than 30 rounds were fired on the vehicle, reported media in India.

A CCTV video shows two cars following Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala's black SUV in Mansa district minutes before he was shot dead. The police said the singer had a bulletproof car, which he did not use today. Visuals show the singer's SUV taking a right turn towards a corner as the two cars trailing him.

Police said Sidhu appeared to have sustained more than eight bullet injuries and was taken to the Mansa civil hospital where he died. The condition of the other two is critical.

Chief medical officer Mansa Ranjit Rai said that Sidhu Moose Wala succumbed to his injuries.

The condition of the two survivors is critical and were referred to a better-equipped hospital.

Sidhu Moosewala joined the Punjab Congress in December 2021 ahead of state elections, saying that he wanted to be part of the system to speak for the underprivileged.

He also contested the Punjab elections from Mansa but lost to Aam Aadmi Party’s Vijay Singla, who was appointed Punjab health minister and sacked on Tuesday last on corruption charges.

The attack comes a day after the Punjab Police ordered the withdrawal of Moosewala’s security along with more than 420 people, including former MLAs, jathedars of two Takhts, heads of Deras, and a few police officers, according to a report by news agency PTI.

The state also downgraded the security cover granted to Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh but restored it hours later amid a controversy. Singh, however, refused to take it back, saying that “Khalsa Panth and our Sikh youth are enough to provide security”.
