BAKERSFIELD — An Indo-American woman will spend the rest of her life in jail after for killing of her grandson, apparently to prevent family shame.

Beant Dhillon was sentenced to 25 years to life, plus 4 years, for the murder of a newborn son of her teen daughter.

A Kern County jury found Dhillon guilty of murder in December.

In November of 2018, Dhillon drowned the newborn, and she and another family member, her nephew, 23-year-old Bakhshinderpal Singh Mann, buried the baby in the backyard of their home.

Dhillon said she killed the baby because she feared her community would speak poorly of her family and not talk to them, according to the report.

Her daughter told police that she was told the baby was taken somewhere to be adopted. She didn’t find out her baby was dead until Feb. 25, when her brother told her the baby was buried in the back yard. The next day, the girl went to a social worker at the school and told her what had happened. The social worker contacted police and the baby’s body was discovered.

Jagsir Singh, the father of the teenage mother, told police he wasn’t home during the birth and death of the baby but was told what had happened afterward, according to a police report.

He told police he allowed the baby to be buried in the backyard and did not seek medical attention for his daughter because he was worried his wife would kick him out of the house and he might be deported, the report stated.

He was arrested on allegations of aiding a felon, felony child abuse and conspiracy. He was released on a $50,000 bail.

Singh committed suicide on March 7, 2019.
