VANCOUVER – Targeted South Van shooting has left an Indo-Canadian man dead in the latest gangland style shooting. Similar shootings also occurred this week in South Surrey (Thursday night) and Surrey Newton (Monday night)..
Vancouver Police have identified 23-year-old Vancouver resident Iqubal Grewal as the man killed Wednesday evening in a gangland style shooting. They are asking for witnesses to come forward.
Grewal was murdered on Wednesday evening. He was found dead in front of a house near Knight Street and East 64th Avenue near 7:30 p.m. Investigators believe Grewal was targeted.
“Investigators have determined the vehicle used in connection to the murder – a GMC Terrain – was burned out in Richmond,” says Constable Tania Visintin, VPD. “We believe there are people out there who have information on this incident and we are urging them to come forward.”
There was a significant police presence near East 64th Avenue and Inverness Street overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning, with a section of the road taped off.
Neighbours told CTV News they heard sounds of gunfire at about 7:30 p.m. and dozens of police cruisers were called to the scene. Police confirmed that was about the time they were called to the area.
The incident is being investigated by the major crime section, but there isn't believed to be a risk to the public.
The South Vancouver investigation comes as officers look into two other homicides that happened in the Downtown Eastside Wednesday. The incidents aren't believed to be connected, police say.
Visintin says she believes the victim had a history with police and no arrests have been made. Investigators are looking into whether the death is related to ongoing gang conflict in the Lower Mainland but haven't confirmed any links.
Visintin also said Vancouver police are in contact with Richmond RCMP after a burned out vehicle was found in that city overnight. No connection between the South Vancouver homicide and the vehicle has been confirmed, however.
Police are also looking for dashcam video from any vehicles that were near Knight Street and East 64th or in the area of Kartner Road and Westminster Highway in Richmond, between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening.
Anyone with information is asked to contact VPD homicide detectives at 604-717-2500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
