Dr. Hari Sharma Foundation held an event on April 5 in Surrey to commemorate the South Asian community winning the right to vote on April 2, 1947.

 SURREY - Dr. Hari Sharma Foundation held an event on April 5 in Surrey to commemorate the South Asian community winning the right to vote on April 2, 1947. 

The event was attended by about 100 people including Gary Begg, British Columbia's Solicitor General; Amna Shah, MLA for Surrey City Centre and Parliamentary Secretary for Mental Health and Addictions, Sunita Dhir, MLA for Vancouver-Langara and Parliamentary Secretary for International Credentials and Rohini Arora, MLA for Burnaby East. 

At the event, the Foundation honoured 5 individuals and an organization for their significant contribution to the community. Those honoured were: Mamta Foundation of Canada, Hermender Singh Kailley, Secretary-Treasurer, BC Federation of Labour; Paul Binning, Community Activist, Patricia Gruben and Martin Gotfrit, Filmmakers, and retired SFU professors, and Baljit Sangra, documentary filmmaker.
