SURREY – A young Indo-Canadian hockey player who was sidelined by concussions, a major danger to players in many sports, died in New York over the weekend.

Parmjot (Parm) Dhaliwal played for the West Kelowna Warriors and was a major prospect before the dreaded injuries due to concussion sidelined him.

Dhaliwal died in a hotel in New York City on Sunday. He was just 23.

Over the span of three full seasons from 2016 through the 2018-2019 campaign, Dhaliwal amassed 38 goals and 82 assists in 148 games.

Due to symptoms from concussions, Dhaliwal was unable to play his final season with the Warriors in 2019-2020.

He never played the game again.

A native of Surrey, Dhaliwal played his prep hockey with the Okanagan Hockey Academy and Yale Hockey Academy in Abbotsford.

Dhaliwal was an expert passer, and had a keen eye for finding his teammates when on the power play.

After playing two games with the Chilliwack Chiefs in 2016, Dhaliwal was signed by the Warriors.

Mike Hardman, a linemate of Dhaliwal in 2019, expressed shock of his passing on twitter.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Riverside Funeral Home in Delta.
