Winnipeg Celebrates The Renaming Of Singh Trail Park To Komagata Maru Park
Winnipeg City council has officially unveiled Komagata Maru park, which was previously named Singh Trail park. On April 28, Council unanimously agreed to rename the green space located at Singh Trail Park to “Komagata Maru Park” to honour the story and history of the Komagata Maru incident. It was due to the efforts of Raj Toor and his Descendants of Komagata Maru, which presented a submission and spoke in the Council meeting for support the renaming of Singh Trail Park to Komagata Maru Park in the memory of the Komagata Maru passengers.

WINNIPEG - Winnipeg City council has officially unveiled Komagata Maru park, which was previously named Singh Trail park.
On April 28, Council unanimously agreed to rename the green space located at Singh Trail Park to “Komagata Maru Park” to honour the story and history of the Komagata Maru incident. It was due to the efforts of Raj Toor and his Descendants of Komagata Maru, which presented a submission and spoke in the Council meeting for support the renaming of Singh Trail Park to Komagata Maru Park in the memory of the Komagata Maru passengers.
Winnipeg Council and Winnipeg residents unveiled the Komagata Maru Park in memory of the Komagata Maru passengers last Friday. The City of Winnipeg officially invited Toor to the Komagata Maru Park unveiling event. Unfortunately he was not able to attend the unveiling event in person but he did attend the Komagata Maru park unveiling event virtually and also spoke to the crowd and shared his grandfather story about the Komagata Maru incident 1914.
“We can’t undo the past but we can move forward and leave a legacy for future generations by educating them about the past.” Toor said.
The South Asian Community is a very important part of Winnipeg, and is one of the fastest growing communities in the city.
“Komagata Maru Park in the City of Winnipeg will help educate the community and remind us of how unique Canada and Winnipeg's diverse makeup is, We are all richer when we remember how special it is to have so many different ethnic communities living together. I hope that it will help to connect Canadians, Winnipeg residents with their past to build a more peaceful and tolerant tomorrow,” Toor said.
