On their way back to Surrey, they decided to take a dip in Harrison lake. But soon, Gurwinder and Harkirat were swept away by the strong currents. After a daylong search, their bodies were recovered on Monday.

HARRISON HOT SPRINGS – Two young Indo-Canadian men have died as a result of drowning at Harrison Lake near the Village of Harrison Hot Springs in B.C., according to RCMP.

Although police have not released the names of the deceased – but DESIBUZZCanada sources tell us that the drowning victims are Gurwinder Singh Dhaliwal and Harkirat Singh.

Surrey residents Gurwinder, Harkirat and their friend, Ranjodh Singh had gone to  attend the weekend nagar kirtan in Abbotsford. On their way back to Surrey, they decided to take a dip in Harrison lake.

But soon, Gurwinder and Harkirat were swept away by the strong currents. After a daylong search, their bodies were recovered on Monday.

Gurwinder’s uncle Lakhvir Singh said Ranjodh was saved by a girl who was swimming nearby in the lake.

He added that Gurwinder had come to Canada in 2013 after getting permanent residency. Harkirat had come to Canada on a study visa in 2012; he had secured a work permit.

 RCMP received a report of three individuals in distress at the lake at around 6 p.m. PT on Sunday night.

Police confirmed Lakhvir Singh's story that witnesses were able to pull one of the individuals – Ranjodh Singh – to safety but were unable to successfully rescue two men, aged 16 and 24.

Gurwinder Singh Dhaliwal and Harkirat Singh were last seen approximately 20 metres from the shore. Police and Kent Harrison Search and Rescue also made attempts to rescue the pair but were unsuccessful.

Members of the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team have since recovered the bodies of the deceased men.

The two deaths are not considered suspicious. An RCMP spokesperson reminds people to swim within their limits and use caution in the water.

Harrison Lake is a 250 square kilometre lake within the Coast Mountains. It is located about 95 kilometres east of downtown Vancouver.

Gurwinder Singh Dhaliwal (15) belonged to Dhulkot village and Harkirat Singh (25) belonged to Rupana village in Punjab.

Both men are likely to be cremated in BC.
