The City’s main business lobby group is urging the provincial government to speed up approval plan to keep the Surrey RCMP.  The Surrey Board of Trade said this week that they are urging Minister Mike Farnworth to expediently review and approve the City of Surrey report that outlines the plan to end the transition.

 SURREY – The City’s main business lobby group is urging the provincial government to speed up approval plan to keep the Surrey RCMP. 

The Surrey Board of Trade said this week that they are urging Minister Mike Farnworth to expediently review and approve the City of Surrey report that outlines the plan to end the transition.

“We are pleased that the City of Surrey intends to end this costly and unnecessary transition,” said Anita Huberman, President & CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade. “After reviewing the report and accounting information, we have found that the transition to the SPS will create greater cost pressures for the business community in Surrey. There is no evidence that a new police force will reduce crime.”

On December 12, Surrey City Council approved a plan to retain the Surrey RCMP as the police of jurisdiction for Surrey. This decision overturned the previous council’s decision to transition to a new police force called the Surrey Police Service (SPS).

The plan titled "Policing Surrey: A Plan to Retain the RCMP as the Police of Jurisdiction in Surrey" will be submitted to the Solicitor General and Minister of Public Safety by December 15, 2022.
