MUMBAI – Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan’s sports drama Dangal had a record breaking weekend with a single day box office record (on Sunday) of over Rs. 41 crore with the film also grossing a huge over Rs. 104.25 crore net.

The wrestling drama smashed all box office records to record the highest single day ever in Bollywood history to become the first film to go over Rs. 40 crore net in a single day.

The film showed excellent growth on Sunday of around 20% since it was a big national holiday it was slightly better than a normal Sunday but the film would have benefited the same or more if Christmas Day had fallen on any other day especially a weekday, reported Boxoffice India.

Despite setting a national record it was still not the highest collection ever in Mumbai as the first day of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was bigger and so was the third day of PK but in the North it smashed records by leaps and bounds.

The weekend business of Dangal (Hindi) is as follows.

Friday – 29,14,00,000

Saturday 34,00,00,000

Saturday – 41,25,00,000 apprx

TOTAL – 1,04,39,00,000 apprx

The film is a blockbuster and it will come down to the weekdays as to how big of a blockbuster the film will become. There are no official holidays in the weekdays but it is a very good period for collections between Christmas and the New Year which gives Dangal a chance to rack big numbers till next Sunday.

The film also released in Tamil and Telugu and the collections are not impressive at all though the Tamil version showed a good trend from low levels so that may hold up well for a couple of weeks. The Telugu version is very poor.
