SURREY – RCMP said a man believed to be connected to a stabbing that occurred in Surrey on December 13 has been arrested in Alberta.
Surrey RCMP’s General Investigation Unit advanced the investigation and on January 25, the BC Prosecution Service approved charges, including attempted murder, against 21-year old Anhad Singh Virk, of Surrey.
Earlier in the week, the police had put out a press release asking for the public’s assistance to locate the suspect, described as a South Asian man, in a stabbing which occurred on December 13, 2018 in the Newton area of Surrey.
The stabbing, which occurred outside of a business in the 13400 block 72 Avenue, shortly after 5:00 pm, resulted in serious injuries to a man in his 50s. The suspect fled the scene prior to police being called.
Police believe this incident was a targeted attack.
Virk faces charges including attempted murder in the targeted Dec. 13 incident where a man in his 50s was seriously injured when he was stabbed outside a business in the 13400 block of 72 Avenue shortly before 5 p.m. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived.
Police say Virk was arrested in Edmonton on Jan. 30. after being spotted by someone in the area.
Virk remains in-custody in Edmonton while arrangements are made for his return to Surrey where he will be brought before the court.
“We would like to thank the public and the Edmonton Police Service for their assistance in locating and arresting the suspect in this occurrence,” says Staff Sergeant Kirk Duncan, General Investigation Unit. “In particular, we would like to thank an alert member of the community who saw our media release and immediately notified police to the suspect’s whereabouts.”
An Canada-wide arrest warrant has been issued against Virk after the charge was approved on January 28, 2018.
