SURREY – A South Asian man has been arrested and charged after stealing a running vehicle in Surrey.
Surrey RCMP said the arrest of the suspect has prompted a reminder from the RCMP Auto Crime Target Team to take precautions to prevent this type of crime.
On June 5, Surrey RCMP received the report that a vehicle was stolen from the 12100-block of 93A Avenue. The vehicle had been left running and unlocked outside while the owner went back into their residence.
The following day the Auto Crime Target Team was conducting proactive patrols and observed the stolen vehicle in the area of 122 Street and 93A Avenue.
Officers followed the vehicle to Holland Park where two males exited the vehicle and were taken into custody. The passenger of the vehicle had outstanding warrants out of Delta and Surrey. Both males were transported to Surrey RCMP cells and held in custody to be brought before the courts.
On June 7, the alleged driver, 24-year-old, Mohammed M Sufi Gaandi, was charged with theft of motor vehicle and possession of stolen property. He was released by the courts on conditions.
With three recent reports of unoccupied running vehicles being stolen in Surrey, this is a good time to remind drivers to never leave vehicles unlocked and running even if only for a short period of time, says Surrey RCMP Auto Crime Target Team Sergeant Jordan Davies. Don’t give criminals an easy opportunity to steal your vehicle; always ensure your vehicle is turned off and locked prior to leaving it unattended.
