SURREY – Outrage over a large “Punjabi-style” brawl is growing in Surrey after a viral video on social media showed the large number of what appears to be largely Indian students involved in a fight at the Strawberry Hill mall parking lot.
Surrey RCMP, who were not initially called but are now investigating, are under pressure to charge the culprits involved in the melee that is bringing the local Indo-Canadian community into disrepute.
The video, which hit social media and was shared on whatsapp on Sunday, shows fists and feet flying in a mass fight in the parking lot of the Strawberry Hill Mall.

Between 10 and 15 men were involved in the fight, but throughout it and even after, no one thought to call the police.
DESIBUZZCanada sources tell us that the fighters were largely Indian students who loiter around the Strawberry Hill area late at night on the weekends.
Surrey RCMP confirms they are investigating, but they are not able to confirm the specific location of the fight or when it occurred.
Police say the area is known to them and officers have been increasing their presence there before the video was made.

The fight appears to be split into several groups. The video focuses on one person in a blue T-shirt being punched and kicked by at least four other males.
The video has been shared on several social media platforms by different people, and it’s unclear where the footage originated.
Const. Richard Wright confirmed Monday that the RCMP was made aware of the incident through social media.
Wright couldn’t give an exact time or location of the fight, but said it happened “over the weekend” in the Strawberry Hill mall area.

Karen Reid Sidhu, executive director of the Surrey Crime Prevention Society, told Global News she was told the fight happened outside the Cineplex movie theatre on Saturday night.
She said she shared the video because volunteers for the society who regularly canvass the area have told her this isn’t the first time fights have broken out in that parking lot.
“This is an ongoing issue,” Reid Sidhu said.
“This is deplorable behaviour, and the individuals who were fighting were putting the public at risk. Vehicles couldn’t get through, people were coming out of the movie theatre. Someone could have gotten seriously hurt.”
Reid Sidhu said volunteers have also witnessed public drinking, dangerous driving and drug use in the same parking lot.
“We’ve witnessed young women being harassed when they go to the movie theatre, to the point where they break down in tears and don’t want to go back,” she said. “In fact, one of my staff was harassed when she was there.”
On Sunday, Reid Sidhu said she planned to bring the issue up with the shopping complex’s owner and Surrey RCMP.
Surrey RCMP spokesperson Const. Richard Wright said police have seen the video and are hoping for witnesses to come forward.
“If they can identify any of the individuals that are seen taking part in the fight in the video, we would like to hear from them,” Wright said.
Wright added the mall is a “hotspot” for frontline officers who regularly patrol the area, but police will be stepping up patrols even further after this latest incident.
“We understand there are community concerns regarding the behaviour in the video,” he said. “Our officers are investigating and have spoken to a number of businesses and residents in the Newton area.”
