India's Supreme Court Says "Women Being Raped Left, Right And Centre!"
Expressing concern over incidents of rape, India's Supreme Court referred to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, which says a woman was raped in India every six hours. According to the data, it said 38,947 women were raped in India in 2016. “What is to be done? Girls and women are getting raped left, right and centre,” it remarked.
NEW DELHI – The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered a blanket ban on publication of pictures and videos of child victims of sexual abuse across the country, even as it raised serious concern over how incidents of rape, saying sexual assaults were happening “left, right and centre”.
Taking strong exception to the publication of images of child victims in Deoria in Uttar Pradesh, a three-judge Bench headed by Justice Madan Lokur directed the media not to publish even blurred/morphed pictures.
Earlier, a similar ban was ordered with regard to victims of the Muzaffarpur shelter home sex abuse on August 2. “They cannot be compelled to relive the trauma again and again,” it had said.
The Bench, including Justices Deepak Gupta and KM Joseph, made it clear that only the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and State Commissions for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) can interview them with the help of counsellors.
It also ordered immediate arrest of the wife of an accused in the Muzaffarpur shelter home sex abuse case for publishing child victims’ names on her Facebook wall.
