Veteran restaurateur Kamal Mroke has brought high-end Indian cuisine in the aptly named Raga (music to all food-lovers) to the Surrey-Guildford area, which is the most underserved in Indian cuisine with most of elite Indian restaurants falling in Newton and Surrey-Delta border areas.

Raga is situated in the Sandman hotel which previously housed the popular Roxy restaurant. Mroke has converted the beautiful setting to give Raga the feel of high-end restaurant similar to new Earls and Cactus Club and other similar Indian restaurants to give clients a great dining experience with his perfected Indian dishes of all varieties and new concoctions.

Mroke has a long history of operating top Indian restaurants in Vancouver from Dawat on Victoria Drive to India Bistro and Copper Chimney in downtown to numerous others. And during a recent visit to Raga along with my friends Bobby Nagra and singer-songwriter Balvir Boparai, we had a chance to sample some tasty dishes picked out by Mroke and reminisce about his long and beautiful journey in the world of Indian cuisine over the last three decades during which he has done and seen everything in the business and found a way to remain in the Indian fine-dining business along with his other businesses including construction as well as his passion for Bollywood.

Mroke has been involved in promoting numerous film star and music concerts as well counting many Bollywood stars like Jimmy Sheirgill as friends.

Raga opened recently with what restaurateurs call Soft Opening to work out all staffing and other kinks and an official Grand Opening is planned for the fall with some big tie-ups.

It was unveiled this week that Raga will have a Grand Opening on October 3rd, an event which will be a fundraiser for Surrey Memorial Hospital’s Children’s Health programs. The 11am to 11pm event is inviting all guests to the grand opening and to contribute to this great cause.

In the meantime - don’t miss an opportunity to check out Raga for a great dining experience in both indoor and patio setting.
