SURREY – Police continue seeking public support in solving the 2016 murder of an Indo-Canadian man in Surrey.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said this week that it continues to request public assistance in the homicide of Jatinder ‘Michael’ Sandhu, in this unsolved case.

On July 23, 2016, the Surrey RCMP responded to a shooting in the area of 14300 block of 90A Avenue. First responders found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim sustained survivable injuries. The other victim was 28-year-old Michael Sandhu, who was transported to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) maintains conduct of this investigation nine years later. This investigation into the death of Michael Sandhu is designated as an unsolved case and is highlighted on IHIT’s Unsolved Cases webpage to further generate public awareness and requests for information.

“This year Michael would have turned 37. We have missed 8 of his birthdays. Michael loved his birthdays. We still acknowledge this day with his favourite cake and letting off balloons at time of his birth,” said a statement from Sandhu’s family.  “It’s been 9 long years since Michael was taken from us, the emptiness that we feel will never fade. There may be people out there who may have information about that night, if so please help bring justice to our family.”

While the evidence gathered to date indicates the shooting was linked to the BC Gang Conflict, investigators believe that these victims were not the intended targets. Neither Michael nor the surviving victim had criminal records.

Investigators continue to urge anyone with information about the homicide of Michael Sandhu to come forward and speak with investigators.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448), or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
