BRAMPTON – Police have charged a Hindu couple in the murder of a Sikh Canadian following communal tensions between Hindus and Sikhs in Brampton on November 3.
Investigators have arrested 47-year-old Rajinder Kumar of Caledon and charged him with second-degree murder of 52-year-old Rabinder Malhi of Brampton. Kumar’s wife Sheetal Verma, 35, of Caledon has also been charged with obstruction of justice.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a home on Deer Ridge Trail just before 10 p.m. on Nov. 9 and located a man suffering from injuries. He was later pronounced dead in hospital.
The cause of death has not been revealed by police.
Investigators did not say what the relationship, if any, there is between the victim and the two individuals arrested.
But people familiar with the victim and accused killers said they all knew each other and Kumar and Malhi apparently worked at the same place.
Police say their investigation is ongoing and are asking anyone with information to contact them at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
