If convicted of the charges, each man faces three to eight years in state prison. SAN FRANCISCO – Police arrested seven Indo-American men on Memorial Day long weekend on suspicion of groping young girls at a California water park.
Many of the seven suspects, who seemed to not speak good enough English and needed Punjabi translators, face charges of inappropriately touching young girls at the Golfland Sunsplash Water Park in Roseville, Calif on May 28.
The suspects are: Gursharanpal Banga, 34; Manpreet Dhillon, 26; Lakhveer Gill, 30; Baljinder Khaira, 38; Balwinder Malhi, 32; Dharampal Singh, 21; and Harpreet Talwar, 18.
Bail was set at $300,000. If convicted of the charges, each man faces three to eight years in state prison.
All seven were released May 30, according to a Fox40 report, which reported that the Placer County District Attorney's Office said there was not enough evidence to formally charge the men, and requested more time to gather more evidence like witness statements and possible surveillance video.
The men must return to court on June 27, said the Fox40 report.
The Roseville Police Department released a news alert May 29, which stated that the men were arrested on felony charges of lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age, and conspiracy to commit a crime.
“It appears that the individuals who were arrested knew each other and worked in a coordinated effort to inappropriately touch several female juveniles,” noted the RPD in the news alert. “We do not believe there’s any ongoing threat to public safety. This is a unique investigation – these individuals might not have been caught if these young victims hadn’t reported the incident to on-site security,” stated the police department, noting that the investigation is ongoing.
Steve Rodgers, general manager with Golfland Sunsplash, said at a press briefing: “These guys were, I think they were, acting up because they were getting saved in all the pools. I don’t know if they could swim. They acted like they couldn’t swim.”
Sunsplash officials said in a statement: “We at Roseville Golfland Sunsplash take allegations of this nature very seriously. We are committed to providing a safe environment for all of our patrons. We contacted the authorities immediately and will fully cooperate with law enforcement agencies investigating this matter. We are unable to discuss any details involving any ongoing investigations.”
