- December 8, 2020
The new executive, joining Premier John Horgan, includes the Chair, House Leader, Whip and deputies. In addition, nominees for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker were also announced. Sharma was chosen as Deputy Caucus Chair.
VICTORIA –Newly elected BC NDP MLA was shown much respect by the NDP caucus as she is the only Indo-Canadian chosen to be part of the new executive for the BC New Democrat Government Caucus, which was appointed Thursday.
The new executive, joining Premier John Horgan, includes the Chair, House Leader, Whip and deputies. In addition, nominees for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker were also announced. Sharma was chosen as Deputy Caucus Chair.
The new BC NDP government caucus and executive’s top priority remains helping people stay safe and secure through the Covid-19 pandemic and leading a recovery that works for everyone.
“Under the leadership of Premier John Horgan, our new executive and the whole New Democrat caucus is already hard at work, with British Columbians and the covid-19 pandemic being the top priority,” said new Caucus Chair Bob D’Eith, MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission.
“We have 57 members who represent the diversity of our province, 23 of whom are new MLAs and all of whom are champions for their communities. Our New Democrat government and caucus understands and shares the experience of British Columbians, and we will continue working hard to support people through the pandemic,” said D’Eith. “As we lead British Columbia’s recovery, we will ensure you and your families are at the very centre.”
The caucus executive leading the 1st session (2020) of the 42nd Parliament:
John Horgan (Langford-Juan De Fuca), Premier
Bob D’Eith (Maple Ridge-Mission), Caucus Chair
Niki Sharma (Vancouver-Hastings), Deputy Caucus Chair
Mike Farnworth (PSSG/Port Coquitlam), House Leader
Lisa Beare (Citizen Services/Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows), Deputy House Leader
Garry Begg (Surrey-Guildford) Government Whip
Michele Babchuk (North Island) Deputy Government Whip
The executive term will run until June 2022, at which point caucus members will elect Chair, Whip and associated deputy positions.
In addition to the caucus executive, Raj Chouhan (Burnaby-Edmonds) was announced as the nominee for Speaker, and Spencer Chandra Herbert (Vancouver-West End) was announced as the nominee for Deputy Speaker. Both positions are elected by the house at the first sitting of the new Parliament.
