VANCOUVER - New Democrats hammered Liberals’ Vancouver-Granville candidate for flipping homes for millions of profits and say Justin Trudeau must be clear if it’s acceptable that his candidate has made millions of dollars flipping dozens homes while people and families have paid the price.

Publicly available documents show that Taleeb Noormohamed has sold at least 41 properties since 2005 and made nearly $5 million. As prices rapidly increased in six years under Trudeau, the Liberal candidate has sold 17 homes and made $3.7 million.

“Justin Trudeau has spent six years letting speculators off the hook as prices skyrocketed,” said New Westminster-Burnaby NDP candidate Peter Julian. “Mr. Trudeau should tell Canadians if he knew about this and if he thinks it’s ok for his candidates to flip homes and drive up prices for everyone else.”

Under Justin Trudeau, the average cost of a home has gone up $433,100 in Greater Vancouver and $300,000 across Canada.

“Justin Trudeau’s housing crisis has driven prices out of reach for so many people in Vancouver and across Canada,” said Vancouver-Granville NDP candidate Anjali Appadurai. “Homes are for living in, and Canadians deserve better.”

Jagmeet Singh and New Democrats plan to fix Trudeau’s housing crisis includes helping first-time homebuyers and closing loopholes that allow big developers force people out of their homes through renovictions.

In addition to the 500,000 new homes Singh committed to building last week, these measures, along with an initiative to tie federal transit funding to municipal housing strategies, will help build, renovate and preserve 1.7 million homes over the next four years.

Singh would end the free ride Justin Trudeau has given the ultra-rich and crack down on the big-money house flippers who are making big profits, taking advantage of tax loopholes and driving up house prices beyond the reach of everyday families.

“While everyday families are playing by the rules and trying to afford a decent home, Justin Trudeau is letting the ultra-rich use Canada’s housing market like a stock market to drive prices up, turn huge profits and use capital gains loopholes to avoid paying their fair share,” said Singh.
