SURREY - Surrey Sikhs came out in large numbers estimated to be over 100 at the Sheraton Hotel recently to protest against Surrey Board of Trade (SBOT) event featuring India’s high commissioner to Canada Sanjay Verma, who along with other Indian diplomats have been hounded by Sikh protestors who hold them and Indian government responsible for the murder of Shaheed Hardeep Singh Nijjar who was gunned down last year at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey by hitmen hired by the Indian government agents.
Perhaps SBOT did not realize that it’s gonna be a mess holding such an event given sensitivity related to India’s targeted attacks against US-Canada-based Sikh activists and pro-Khalistanis. Initially there were reports that event would be cancelled but it did turn into embarrassment for SBOT as the turnout was abysmal as DesibuzzCanada and Indo-media pool photographer Sukhwant Dhillon reported only 25 people showed up including SBOT staff.
Verma and SBOT head Anita Huberman did not address the protestors but the stress was visible on their faces, according to Dhillon.
It’s a tough time for Indian diplomats in Canada right now as India has not owned up or apologized for the Nijjar assassination as the Canadian government and police have said they have evidence of India’s involvement and arrests in the Nijjar murder are coming soon.
