NANAIMO - Charges of first-degree murder have been laid in connection to a May 2021 shooting of a South Asian man.
Forty-two-year-old Ronald Joseph Campbell has now been charged with the first-degree murder of Yasin Khan.
The shooting occurred at approximately 3:30 PM on May 20, 2021 in the parking lot of a Wendy’s restaurant in Rock City Plaza.
This shooting was carried out in a public place and in broad daylight.
As the investigation developed, officers arrested several individuals at the Best Western Hotel on Metral Drive following the murder. A vehicle associated to these individuals was seized. The Best Western hotel was secured for a period of time while officers searched the interior of the building for any forensic evidence related to the shooting.
Police said at the time this is a dynamic investigation and at this time we cannot confirm if there are others who are not in custody, who may be involved in this shooting. As further information becomes known, the public will be advised, said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
Police said recently that it takes time to gather the necessary evidence to support a charge of murder.
“I would like to acknowledge the dedication and tenacity shown by the officers of our Serious Crime Section who led this complex investigation and worked with several police agencies, RCMP Forensic Services, the BC Prosecution Service, and the general public,” said Insp. Andrew Burton, Acting Officer in Charge of the Nanaimo RCMP.
Accused killer Campbell currently remains in custody.
Police said as this matter is now before the courts, no further statement will be issued.
