OBITUARY – Malkiat Singh Kular

It is with much sadness, that the Kular family – Sukhi and Greg Kular, announce the passing of their father, Malkiat Singh Kular. "

"As we grew up, dad did everything he could to provide us with a good life and opportunities for our future. This resulted in us moving from Kenya to England, then to Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver. Many of our relatives ended up moving to Canada because of my dad," Sukhi wrote on his Facebook page.

 When the Kulars moved to Canada, Malkiat had a hard time getting work so he took a job delivering pizzas. Every night we’d count the change he got as tips. Meanwhile, he studied French and obtained his accounting designation – BComm. His next job was in the accounting department at Montreal Trust, where he worked his way up to senior management. After a number of years, he was transferred from Montreal to Calgary

Due to his senior position, he faced discrimination by many of the people he supervised for being a minority and coming from Montreal. He had worked hard to obtain his position and had enjoyed the respect of his colleagues in Montreal, but the discriminatory climate in Calgary caused him to leave the company after only a few years.

After leaving his job, Kular family faced hard times and moved into a smaller home.

"Dad was under a lot of stress as he had a family to take care of. During these times, he showed strength, perseverance and determination to improve his life, which are all qualities I admire today. He eventually became a successful realtor and made many new connections. He retired at age 60 when we moved to Surrey. Dad made many friends and was always willing to lend a hand. He was an excellent story teller and was always ready to share a good story about his adventures. Dad was an advocate for education and equality. His contributions helped to build a classroom and a library in India, which he dedicated to his father who died in the war. Through both good times and life’s challenges, dad set an example for us. This year, he and my mom had their 65th anniversary.

"We asked mom the secret to a successful marriage and she just said 'I hope everyone has a happy life like us.'

"I’m thankful that dad was able to enjoy 86 years of life, and am blessed to have had him as my father," Sukhi concluded.

The funeral will be held at the Riverside Funeral Home at 7410 Hopcott Rd, Delta on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 3pm, followed by prayers at the Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib at 15255 68th Ave., Surrey. For more information call Sukhi Kular at 778-889-5228 or Greg Kular at 604-857-3268.
