SURREY – Two young “white”men have been charged with first degree murder in connection with the Friday morning gangland murder of Hells Angels member Suminder Grewal in South Surrey.
On Saturday, 20-year-old Calvin Powery-Hooker and 21-year-old Nathan De Jong were each charged with first degree murder for Grewal’s shooting death. The two accused men are known to police and investigators are firm in their belief that this was a targeted incident.
Grewal was a well-established member of the notorious organized crime group the Hells Angels. IHIT said it will be engaging with numerous gang enforcement units throughout the lower mainland region that will be working to mitigate any ongoing violence.

Forty-three-year-old Surrey resident Grewal was shot and killed on Friday, August 2, at about 9:20 a.m., in the 3000-block of 152 Street in Surrey and a suspect vehicle was seen speeding away from the scene.
Acting on information from the public, police found the suspect vehicle a short time later and arrested two men in relation to the homicide. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in to take over the investigation.
“IHIT wishes to thank the public as well as our policing partners from the Surrey RCMP, CFSEU and IPDS for their courageous efforts,” says Sergeant Frank Jang of IHIT. “Despite the arrests made in relation to today’s shooting, there is much work ahead for our detectives and partners this long weekend. We need to speak with everyone who was in the area at the time of the shooting and for Mr. Grewal’s close associates to come forward and help us solve his murder.”

IHIT and its partners have been working continuously since Saturday’s deployment and have forwarded their findings so far in the investigation for charge approval consideration to the B.C. Prosecution Service.
Powery-Hooker and De Jong will appear before a judge in B.C. Provincial Court on Tuesday, August 6.
“We urge anyone who had recent contact with Calvin Powery-Hooker and/or Nathan De Jong to contact IHIT as soon as possible,” Jang said. “IHIT is appealing to the public for dash cam video from drivers who were travelling along 152 Street between 32 Avenue and 96 Avenue around the time of the shooting.”

IHIT has conduct of the investigation and is working closely with its partners from the B.C. Coroners Service and the Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit to complete priority tasks including a thorough neighbourhood canvass for video surveillance footage and witnesses.
IHIT’s crime scene manager will be working with forensic specialists from the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) to complete a fulsome forensic examination of the suspect vehicle and the physical evidence collected at the scene of the shooting.
Anyone with information, who have yet to come forward to police, is asked to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca
