The event was meant to honour Chantel Moore, a Vancouver Island woman who was killed by New Brunswick police last year. Shortly after the blanketing ceremony a woman came up behind Del Manak and poured some sort of liquid on him. Five people have been arrested following the incident.

VICTORIA — Arrests have been made following an attack on an Indo-Canadian top cop in Victoria

Five people have been arrested after some sort of liquid was poured on Victoria’s police chief Del Manak at a ceremony for an Indigenous woman.

The event at the B.C. legislature was organized to pay tribute to Chantel Moore, the 26-year-old woman from British Columbia who was killed by New Brunswick police during a wellness check last year, reported Canadian Press.

The liquid incident occurred after a traditional blanketing ceremony.

In a press release, Victoria police say a female approached Chief Manak from behind at the memorial, which he was invited to attend by Moore’s mother.

“Martha Martin, mother of Chantel Moore, calls the assault on @ChiefManak ‘Terrible & unacceptable,'” a tweet from police reads.

Manak was unharmed.

The suspect was located by officers nearby, but she was surrounded by individuals who then surrounded the officers.

This file is still under investigation. If you have information about this incident and have not yet spoken with officers, call the Report Desk at (250) 995-7654 extension 1.
