KAMLOOPS – A young Indo-Canadian man has been found murdered in a Kamloops parking lot that police describe as distressing.
RCMP found 18-year-old Jagraj Dhinsa’s body which they said had “obvious injuries” in the parking lot of St. Joseph’s Cemetery and the Tk’emlúps health clinic/Tk’emlúps church at around 8 a.m. last Saturday.
Authorities didn’t release the cause of death but are identifying him to try to find people who had contact with Dhinsa on Jan. 28 or 29, or have information that would help investigators piece together the case.
“In investigations like this, early tips and information from the public can be crucial,” said Insp. Brent Novakoski of the B.C. RCMP Major Crime Section in a statement.
Police are seeking any video surveillance, cellphone or dashcam footage taken between the afternoon of Jan. 28 and the morning of Jan. 29 in the Chilcotin Road area where Dhinsa’s body was found, to Lafarge Road at Dallas Drive in Kamloops, where a black 2014 Honda Accord linked to Dhinsa was located, reported Postmedia.
“Our members were distressed with the major incident on our Indian reserve and we appreciate the collaborative efforts to ensure that there was no immediate threat to those residing in the areas,” said Tk’emlúps Kukpi7 (Chief) Rosanne Casimir in a statement.
“Our condolences are with the family impacted by this tragic loss and our hope is that they get the answers they seek to honour his life.”
Dhinsa was a student at Sahali secondary, according to online news outlet Castanet Kamloops.
“In response to this upsetting news, the school, in consultation with the School District 73 support team, has implemented a plan that allows students an opportunity to talk about their thoughts and feelings with professional staff,” reads a statement being sent to SD73 parents.
A small memorial has been set up where Dhinsa’s body was located.
Anyone with information about Dhinsa’s death can call police at 250-828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
