VANCOUVER – An Indo-Canadian man from Surrey has been arrested in the 2017 murder in the downtown eastside.
The VPD’s Homicide Unit arrested Ranjit Sangha for the murder of 33-year-old Vancouver resident Joseph Jandrew.
Jandrew was found suffering from stab wounds around 9:30 p.m. on October 12 on Commercial Drive near East 1st Avenue. He was rushed to the hospital where he died of his injuries.
Sangha, a 47-year-old Surrey resident, has now been charged with 2nd-degree murder.
The victim of a fatal stabbing in East Vancouver last year did not know his accused killer, police say.
Sangha an Indo-Canadian turned himself into Vancouver police on Wednesday.
Jandrew was 33 years old when he died after an altercation near Commercial Drive and East First Avenue.
Investigators relied on surveillance video and witness statements to identify Sangha as a suspect, according to police spokesperson Sgt. Jason Robillard.
“Our investigators were not able to find a relationship [between the two men] and believe this to be one of the first times they met,” Robillard said.
The stabbing was Vancouver’s 16th of 19 homicides last year. Sixty-five percent of those crimes have been solved, according to Robillard.
Sangha remains in custody and is scheduled to make a court appearance on July 25.
