On Friday, more than 8 years after his wife's murder, Iqbal Gill, entered a guilty plea to conspiracy to commit murder against Kulwinder Gill in British Columbia Supreme Court.  Iqbal Gill will appear in court on November 1, 2017 for sentencing.  “In partnership with Crown Counsel and the Abbotsford Police Department, three men have been prosecuted and are serving sentences for their roles in the murder of Kulwinder Gill.”  Cpl. Meghan Foster of IHIT says, “The last remaining trial against Gurpreet Atwal is scheduled for May 2018.”

ABBOTSFORD – Iqbal Singh Gill, the accused kill of his wife Kulwinder Kaur Gill, has pleaded guilty to her 2009 murder in Abbotsford.

On April 27, 2009, members of the Abbotsford Police Department were called to the 34000 Block of Townshipline Road in Abbotsford, BC, for a report of a female who had been struck by a vehicle which had failed to remain at the scene of the accident

As this investigation progressed it was determined that foul play was suspected and IHIT was called in to lead the murder investigation.  The victim was identified as 42-year-old Abbotsford resident, Kulwinder Kaur Gill.

Police said Friday that after a very involved four year investigation by IHIT, in partnership with Abbotsford Police Department and RCMP on a National level, they  had secured charges on four individuals including Gill’s husband, 53-year-old Abbotsford resident Iqbal Gill.

In April of 2013, these four individuals were arrested and have since appeared in court to face their alleged crimes.

Another one of four men accused in Kulwinder Gill's killing had pleaded guilty to conspiracy in June 29.

Sukhpal Johal enter a guilty plea after he was initially charged with conspiracy and being an accessory to murder after the fact. Details about the case that were discussed during the hearing cannot be reported because they are subject to a publication ban.

He was sentenced on  July 18, 2013.

According to information previously released by police, Kulwinder Kaur Gill and her husband, Iqbal Singh Gill, had been walking on the side of the road — something they often did in the evening — when she was hit by a pickup that was travelling west. Kulwinder Gill was thrown into a ditch by the impact, and first-responders were unable to revive her.

Although it was initially believed to be a hit-and-run, police soon suspected a homicide had taken place. Arrests were made and charges laid almost four years later.

Iqbal Gill and Gurpreet Singh Atwal were the last to be tried as previously the case against the fourth co-accused, Jaspreet Singh Sohi, concluded on Oct. 28, 2015.

Sohi pleaded guilty to a charge of being an accessory to murder after the fact and received a sentence of time served plus one day in jail. A charge of first-degree murder was stayed.
