SURREY – Powerlifter Sumeet Sharma, who has been lifting for 4 years, says representing Canada on the world stage has been one of the greatest honour of his life, and he is so grateful to his wife, his family, and the lifting community for helping him get this far.

Sharma entered his first competition in 2016 at the British Columbia Powerlifting Association fall classic powerlifting championship, where he took a silver medal. His experience with powerlifting has been incredibly positive for him.

“I have an amazing community of guys that helped him when he was starting out, and in general he thinks that’s the single greatest thing about lifting – the people in the community are so positive and co-operative, everyone helps each other improve and encourages each other,” he said. “ Really it would have been impossible for him without their help.“

In addition to his Panama Gold media, Sharma has won gold in both 2017 and 2018 at the Western Powerlifting Championships. I also placed 4th in powerlifting in the country in 2018.

From these successes, he was chosen to represent Canada at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship in Newfoundland in September where he won silver in bench press for team Canada.  The experience at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship really helped him prepare for the North American championship in Panama, which was held in October.

Sharma won gold for team Canada in bench press in Panama, his greatest achievement in the sport so far but he wants to go much further.  In January, he will be going to high schools in the lower mainland to give workshops to PE classes about powerlifting.

He recommends that if anyone is thinking about getting into lifting he really suggest you give it a try, it’s had a huge positive impact on his life inside and outside the gym.

Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on any of three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. I pulled off this gold medal win in bench press with an impressive 370 pounds.
