The case of 23-year-old Punjab-based Lavpreet Singh and his jilted wife has been in the news in Canada and Punjab over the sordid affair of Lavpreet marrying the girl and then financing her immigration to Canada to the tune of 40 lakh rupees ($75,000 CAD). Lavpreet’s case is part of an absurd kind of immigration racket where young women in Punjab who can pass ILET English exam are recruited and then funded by families of young men and sent to Canada with the agreement that they will sponsor the man once they get their PR in Canada. In many cases, the marriages are fake and it is just ceremonial to get the financing party to Canada. Canadian immigration officials must take note that many such illegal schemes are being used under the guise of student visas for the purpose of illegal immigration racket that is having dire consequences in Canada and are leading to social catastrophe as in the case of Lavpreet, who committed suicide after his fully-funded wife stopped talking to him and refused to uphold her part of the illegal immigration bargain.

BRAMPTON/CHANDIGARH - Punjab State Women Commission chairperson Manisha Gulati met the family of 23-year-old Lavpreet Singh of Kothe Gobindpura village in Dhanaula, who died by suicide over alleged fraud by his Canada-based wife Beant Kaur Bajwa.

The case of the jilted wife has been in the news in Canada and Punjab over the sordid affair of Lavpreet marrying the girl and then financing her immigration to Canada to the tune of 40 lakh rupees ($75,000 CAD).

Lavpreet’s case is part of a wider illegal immigration racket where many are partaking in this scheme and then crying later when the women having once reached Canada do not uphold their end of the bargain.  Many such youngsters facing a similar situation came to Lavpreet’s residence following his death to seek the commission's help.

Minister Gulati assured youth’s mother and father of taking up the matter for formulating a policy for such cases at the state and Centre levels.

“I will take this issue up with the top authorities so that such suicides could be prevented in the coming days,” she said.
