VANCOUVER – An Indo-Canadian man from Vancouver has been charged in the deaths of two passengers, believed to be international students from India, in his vehicle following a crash on Cypress Bowl Road early Sept. 2.
On Friday, the Crown swore two counts of criminal negligence causing death against 22-year-old Dilpreet Singh Sandhu, who spent a brief time in hospital before being returned to West Vancouver cells. He is due back in court on Sept. 8.
According to police, a group of people in three separate vehicles were out celebrating around 4 a.m. when the driver of a Jeep crashed while coming into the hairpin turn just above the West Vancouver works yard, reported North Shore News.
Two 20-year-old Surrey men were killed.
Social media reports say the deceased are international students named Kulbir Singh and Siddhant Garg. Singh and Garg reportedly belong to Faridkot city of Punjab.
Three others were also injured in the accident.
The deceased youth went to a birthday party in Vancouver and then allegedly on a joyride to Cypress mountain. The accident occurred while returning.
“It's our understanding that they were actually celebrating the birthday of one of the people involved. Unfortunately, it was actually one of the people who was killed during the crash,” said Const. Kevin Goodmurphy, West Vancouver police spokesman. “And we do suspect that speed and alcohol likely played a contributing factor in this incident.”
The road was closed until 2 p.m. on Thursday while the RCMP’s Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service was on the scene. Their investigation continues.
“It's absolutely horrific any way you look at it, but the fact that it was one of the deceased's birthdays, I think, is that much more impactful. It's just absolutely horrible and tragic for everyone – family and friends,” Goodmurphy said.
