Consumer Protection BC Put In Charge Of Handling Complaints About Price Gouging During COVID-19

Consumer Protection BC has been appointed as the first and main point of contact for all complaints related to price gouging and reselling of essential goods and supplies in the province.

VICTORIA– If you want to make a complaint about price gouging by retailers, now you can call Consumer Protection BC, which the B.C. Government has put in charge of taking all price gouging related complaints.
Consumer Protection BC has been appointed as the first and main point of contact for all complaints related to price gouging and reselling of essential goods and supplies in the province.
“This is a difficult time for consumers and businesses alike and we’ve been working to help people navigate this confusing new landscape. We encourage compassion and understanding for each other – and there’s no place for people to take advantage of each other and that includes price gouging,” says Rob Gialloreto, President & CEO of Consumer Protection BC. “As a provincial regulator and trusted marketplace guardian, we are prepared to carry out this important work on behalf of the government and the consumers of BC.”
Consumer Protection BC has been accepting price gouging tips from the public since early March to assess the scope of the issue and give consumers a place to turn to during the pandemic. With this government announcement, the organization will now formally intake and assess price gouging complaints in the province, work with businesses to voluntarily correct the behaviour and liaise with other law enforcement agencies when escalation is deemed necessary. The police and enforcement officers are responsible for issuing violation tickets.
“We’ve received almost 1,500 price gouging complaints so far,” explains Gialloreto. “We encourage anyone to report an instance of price gouging through our website.”
When submitting a price gouging complaint, please provide:
*Your name and contact information, for possible follow up
*The type of product being sold, the new price, and the previous price if possible
*Any evidence, if possible, such as a picture or receipt
*The name of the business and the address, including the city
