VANCOUVER – Fraudster unholy-men or “Con-Babas” are a staple in India, from Dera miscreant and criminal Ram Rahim to thousands of such ungodly master manipulators who build up a following of vulnerable people with the help of equally greedy inner circle of yes-men and then loot at will along with other crimes against humanity.

The family of Vancouver-based Indo-Canadian woman Gurveen Kaur Khaira, wife of the late Colonel Jasvinder Singh, is the latest to fall victim to one such thug bab based near Ludhiana, Punjab.

Khaira and her sister also residing in Vancouver, Canada, are accusing Sant Darshan Singh Dhaki of Makshoodra, Ludhiana district, of manipulating their elderly mother Balwant Kaur, who is approximately 90 years old, of brain-washing her and then illegally transferring the family home worth nearly Rs. 8 crore (nearly $1.5 million CAD) to his possession and usurping the family property.

They accuse to Sant Darshan Singh Dhaki of manipulating and brainwashing their mother and illegally transferring the family house to Satinder Singh, a close associate of the said Sant. They have filed legal action against the Sant and Satinder Singh to seek return of the property.

Khaira told DESIBUZZCanada that upon confronting Satinder Singh regarding this matter, he informed her and her legal team that Sant Darshan Singh wishes to sell this property.

“Disturbingly, our mother appears to be under the influence of Sant Darshan Singh, as she has warned us that if we do not comply with his wishes, she could face dire consequences, including the threat of a venomous snake in next life and her deceased husband's potential damnation in the afterlife,” Khaira said of the Con-Baba’s manipulation and dirty tricks on their vulnerable mother.

“Furthermore, she claims that my husband's demise was a result of a curse imposed by Sant Darshan Singh prior to his passing. We strongly suspect that Sant Darshan Singh is providing our mother with some form of medication, as she firmly believes that unless she transfers the property to him, our entire family, including both daughters and their relatives, will face grave consequences within 24 hours,” Khaira added.

She said currently, she and her sister have an ongoing legal battle in the Supreme Court.

“We kindly request the intervention of the Punjab government in order to address this matter, as the aforementioned Sant appears to be driven by greed in his pursuit of our property. Additionally, Sant Darshan Singh has coerced our mother into selling a revolver using fraudulent documents.” Khaira said.

“It is worth noting that he has also confiscated all of our belongings from our home, including our late father's personal items, which hold great sentimental value for our family. We would also like to appeal to the public for any information regarding other potential victims of Sant Darshan Singh's deceitful practices. It is evident that he is holding our mother hostage in this distressing situation,” she added.

Khaira said it is with a heavy heart, she must share that their mother, in her utmost compassion, transferred the property to her aide, Sant Darshan Singh.

“In a selfless act, she generously contributed Rs. 9.5 lakh from her own account. Unfortunately, sorrowfully, an equivalent amount was withdrawn from our mother's account and deposited into Sant Darshan Singh's aid account multiple times within a span of two months, all in an attempt to falsely portray that Sant Darshan Singh had paid 1.25 crore,” Khaira said of Sant’s fraud schem to usurp the family property.

Sant Darshan Singh is no stranger to criminal conduct as seen from his colourful past with numerous trips to prison in the past. He and 18 his henchmen were indicted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for opening fire and attacking the villagers nearby their compound back in 1999.

case, FIR 61 registered on May 8, 1999, was entrusted to the premier investigation by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in January 17, 2002, with the observations that the dispute pertains to land but it appears to have acquired a religious and a political colour as there are complaints of sacrilege and involvement of politicians.

Bhagwant Singh, a member of the village panchayat, said that he had maintained all along that Darshan Singh, originally a resident of Gharuan village in Kharar tehsil, had usurped their land with the help of some villagers. He wanted to encroach on a large portion of land which was resisted by the villagers.

As the self-styled godman was politically well connected, he sought the help of his political masters and started terrorising them. Many were booked in false cases and those who stood up to him were warned of dire consequences, he added.

He said matters came to a head on the morning of May 8 when some villagers were bathing their buffaloes in the village pond. The Baba, carrying a double-barreled gun and a revolver, led a gang of over 25-30 persons and allegedly exhorted them to teach the villagers a lesson they will never forget. Darshan Singh fired from his gun and on this signal others too opened fire while those carrying swords and lathis pounced on the villagers, he revealed.

Those injured included Davinder Singh on whose complaint a case was filed at the Payal police station under Sections 307, 506, 323, 324, 325, 326, 148, 149 of the IPC and Section 25/27 of the Arms Act, he added.

The CBI found that there was enough evidence to proceed against Baba Darshan Singh besides Beant Singh, Chamkaur Singh, Gurdev Singh, Balbir Singh, Manjit Singh, Sher Singh, Lakhvir Singh, Gurmit Singh, Lakhvir Singh, Gurmukh Singh, Jaspal Singh, Jagdeep Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Manjit Singh, Charanjit Singh, Nihal Singh, Balli and Dilbagh Singh.

Bhagwant Singh has appealed to all villagers, who had been supporting the Baba, to join hands so that the latter could not entrench himself in this area. There was great need to expose such godmen in the larger interests of the society, he stressed.

The Con-Baba Darshan Singh is facing similar uprising from the village residents where he is currently has his criminal compound and they are organizing an uprising against him and his followers for criminal harassment and thuggery.
