City Of Vancouver Proclaims May 23 As Komagata Maru Day Of Remembrance

The City of Vancouver Proclaims and declares May 23, 2022 as “Komagata Maru Day of Remembrance” in the City of Vancouver after a request from members of the Descendants of the Komagata Maru . The Proclamation reads: “Proclaim and declare that May 23 , 2022 as Komagata Maru Day of Remembrance in the City of Vancouver will help educate the community and remind us of how unique Canada’s , British Columbia’s and Vancouver's diverse makeup is. We are all richer when we remember how special it is to have so many different ethnic communities living together. I hope that it will help to connect Canadians, British Columbians and Vancouverites with their past to build a more peaceful and tolerant tomorrow.”

VANCOUVER - The City of Vancouver Proclaim and declare May 23, 2022 as “Komagata Maru Day of Remembrance” in the City of Vancouver after a request from members of the Descendants of the Komagata Maru .
The Proclamation reads: “Proclaim and declare that May 23 , 2022 as Komagata Maru Day of Remembrance in the City of Vancouver will help educate the community and remind us of how unique Canada’s , British Columbia’s and Vancouver's diverse makeup is. We are all richer when we remember how special it is to have so many different ethnic communities living together. I hope that it will help to connect Canadians, British Columbians and Vancouverites with their past to build a more peaceful and tolerant tomorrow.”
“I would like to say thank you to the Respected Mayor Kennedy Stewart and Councillors City of Vancouver for Proclaim and declare that May 23, 2022 as “Komagata Maru Day of Remembrance ”in the City of Vancouver,” said Raj Singh Toor, Vice President and Spokesperson for the Descendants of the Komagata Maru Society.
Toor, along with his brother Jaswinder Toor, was officially invited by Mayor Kennedy Stewart, who read the Proclamation 9:30 AM in the Council meeting before presenting the Toor brothers with the original Proclamation Copy and posed for photos with them and City staff.

- Featuring the official event on vancouver.ca with a video acknowledgement and write-up [feature the video that was made in 2021]
- Providing social media acknowledgements through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
- The illumination of City Hall and Burrard Bridge in the colour [orange] on Monday, May 23 2022.
It’s a great tribute to those who suffered a lot during the tragedy. We can’t undo the past but we can move forward and leave a legacy for future generations by educating them about the past,” Raj Toor said.
