VICTORIA - Premier David Eby has called two byelections for the electoral districts of Vancouver-Mount Pleasant and Langford-Juan de Fuca in late June.

Final voting day for both electoral districts will be June 24, 2023.

Vancouver-Mount Pleasant and Langford-Juan de Fuca became vacant when Melanie Mark and former premier John Horgan resigned as MLAs earlier this year. Mark was the first First Nations woman to serve in the B.C. legislature and as a cabinet minister.

The formerly NDP-held ridings have fielded what the NDP says are two strong candidates with commitment to work hard for every vote.

Representing the BC NDP in Langford-Juan de Fuca is community leader and school board trustee, Ravi Parmar. His significant role in the expansion of public schools in the Sooke School District, coupled with his dedication to improving infrastructure and healthcare services, demonstrates his unwavering commitment to the people of his community.

"I am ready to get to work for people in Langford-Juan de Fuca," said Ravi Parmar. "Building on the record of my friend and mentor, John Horgan, I’m running to continue the work of delivering on what matters to our growing communities: housing, continuing to fund record school construction, healthcare, and putting more money back in your pockets. We’ve made great progress together, but there’s so much more to do."

In Vancouver-Mount Pleasant, the BC NDP is fielding respected Indigenous leader, Joan Phillip. With a lifelong commitment to justice, human rights, and the environment, Phillip will campaign hard to bring her extensive experience in community development and Indigenous affairs to the BC Legislature.

"I am honoured to stand for the BC NDP in Vancouver-Mount Pleasant," said Joan Phillip. "Our community deserves a fierce advocate, and I am committed to being that voice, fighting for justice, tackling housing costs, creating supports for mental health and addictions, and helping our healthcare system recover from the pandemic."
