Hershan “Shawn” Bains Who Was Charged With Killing Steve Nagra In 2009 Was Killed Thursday Night!

The latest victim has been identified as 36-year-old Maple Ridge resident, Hershan “Shawn” Bains, who has a long criminal past as he was charged in the 2009 murder of Steve Nagra in Maple Ridge. “This homicide is believed to be a targeted act, and there are people who have information about what occurred. SURREY – There seems to be open season on Indo-Canadian underworld figures as a second Gangland figure was killed Thursday night following the shooting death of Karanpartap Waraich Monday night in Surrey.

The latest victim has been identified as 36-year-old Maple Ridge resident, Hershan “Shawn” Bains, who has a long criminal past as he was charged in the 2009 murder of Steve Nagra in Maple Ridge.          

 “This homicide is believed to be a targeted act, and there are people who have information about what occurred. It’s imperative that they step forward and contact police so that those responsible are held accountable,” said Cpl. Meghan FOSTER of IHIT.

Just after 8:00 p.m. Thursday night, the Surrey RCMP was requested to check the well-being of male found unresponsive in his vehicle in the 7400 block of Sinclair Crescent. 

When police arrived, they located the unresponsive male who they said was deceased from injuries that appeared to be gunshot wounds.  The investigation was deemed a homicide and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team took conduct.

IHIT is working closely with the Surrey RCMP, the BC Coroner’s service, and IFIS to gather and process evidence.  The area surrounding the crime scene has been cleared by police, but neighbourhood canvassing will continue throughout today. 

It is early in the investigation, but this shooting appears to be a targeted act.  It is unknown if this homicide is linked to other recent shootings, or the murder of Mr. Wariach that occurred on January 23, 2017.

In the 2009 murder of 29-year-old Steve Nagra , Bains, 28, from Maple Ridge, was with second-degree murder in the shooting death after a witness identified him.

Nagra was shot in the chest on May 28, 2009 and drove himself to hospital where he died the following day.

RCMP Cpl. Dale Carr said Bains is a known gang associate, adding that it's not uncommon for homicides to take longer to solve.

Bains' murder comes on the heels of the killing of 22 year old Karanpartap Waraich. who was killed on Monday night in Surrey.

“Mr. Waraich is known to police and evidence to this point suggests this was a targeted homicide. There are many more investigative avenues that IHIT needs to concentrate on and we are looking to speak with any witnesses who may not have already come forward to police.  Thankfully, there were no other victims as a result of this brazen shooting,” says S/Sgt. On Monday night just before 9:15pm, the Surrey RCMP responded to a shots fired call in the 12900 block of 96 Avenue after the driver of a Jeep Cherokee crashed into a McDonald's sign after someone opened fire on his vehicle.

The grey SUV had been travelling westbound on 96th Avenue when shots rang out.

The Jeep crossed several lanes of traffic and went up over a sidewalk before coming to rest against the golden arches.

One witness told CTV Vancouver it sounded like an automatic weapon, with shots fired in rapid succession.

Waraich suffered several gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics.

The busy stretch of road has a number of strip malls and small businesses and police say bystanders could have easily been hurt by the shooting or crash.

"Most people don't get involved in these sorts of things and there were bystanders so it's very fortunate nobody was hurt," said RCMP Regional Duty Officer Insp. Suki Manj.

A nearby surveillance camera on a street lamp may play a role in the investigation, along with a number of witnesses.

"We do have people who have come forward with what they saw so we're trying to round them up and gain all the information we can," said Insp. Manj.
