SURREY – Another Indo-Canadian business was targeted in the latest alleged extortion related shooting in Surrey.
Surrey Police Service (SPS) is investigating an overnight shooting into a business in the Newton neighbourhood of Surrey. The target of this shooting was Indo-Canadian owned Star Auto-body.
On October 10 at approximately 8:45 am police responded to reports of a shooting in the 8200 block of 124 Street, Surrey. SPS Frontline members located a business that had been damaged by numerous bullets. The business was closed at the time of the shooting, and nobody was injured or present in the business at the time.
SPS Frontline Investigative Support Team (FLIST) attended the scene and is assisting with the investigation. Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS) attended the scene and assisted with the collection of evidence.
Bullets fired at closed businesses – particularly those owned by South Asian residents of Surrey – have been a hallmark of the recent spate of extortion attempts across the city and around the Lower Mainland.
While some of the extortion attempts have been linked to the India-based Lawrence Bishnoi gang – which Ottawa recently designated a terrorist organization – police have characterized others as the work of copycats attempting to capitalize on the fears of the South Asian community.
Several arrests have been made, but dozens of extortion-related police files remain open in Surrey and elsewhere, which multiple cross-jurisdictional police task forces set up in an effort to combat the issue.
Despite its similarities to previous extortion cases, the latest shooting incident has “no established ties to any extortion investigations,” the SPS said in its release Friday.
While the motive for the incident is still under investigation, there are no established ties to any extortion investigations.
Anyone with information about this incident, the identity of the suspect, or in possession of any dashcam or CCTV footage should contact the SPS non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and quote file number 25-89401 (SP) or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.solvecrime.ca.
