CALGARY – A Sikh-Canadian man is presumed drowned after he fell into a raging river in Banff National Park this weekend in a freak accident.
“I am deeply saddened to share that our friend Gagandeep Singh is no long here with us,” Singh’s friend Parmeet Singh wrote on facebook with pictures of Gagandeep. “He was a caring, bright soul that will be missed. He came to Canada in 2016 as a student with a lot of hopes and dreams. May he Rest In Peace.”
On Saturday at about 7 p.m., Lake Louise RCMP, Parks Canada and the Lake Louise Fire Department responded to a report that a man fell into the North Saskatchewan River along the Glacier Lake trail and was swept away.
RCMP said the victim and two others “stopped for photos beside the river while hiking when the incident occurred.”
RCMP said they are working with Parks Canada visitor safety specialists to conduct a search and rescue operation, which has been ongoing since Saturday night.
Gagandeep hasn't been found, and the search operation has been ongoing since Saturday night, RCMP said.
Glacier Lake Trail is a 17-kilometre trail, located about 75 kilometres northwest of Lake Louise.
